Behind the Ingredients: Why Aloe Vera Remains at the Heart of Our Formulas
Long before there was a Wonderbalm, there was a sunburn.
When my daughter Elly was three years old, she suffered a severe sunburn. Like many parents, I rushed to the store looking for products that would help soothe her skin. But each cream seemed to create a new problem. The ingredients that were supposed to help often caused stinging, discomfort, or irritation when applied to her already sensitive skin.
As I searched for something gentle enough to comfort her, I found myself returning to the simplest solution I could think of: fresh aloe vera and olive oil.
The aloe vera provided a cooling, soothing sensation, while the olive oil helped soften and protect her skin. Together they seemed to bring relief when many of the products I had purchased could not.
That experience stayed with me.
Years later, while exploring traditional skincare methods, I came across a collection of historic Greek cold cream recipes. I was fascinated by the simplicity of the formulas and the generations of knowledge behind them. These recipes became an inspiration for my own formulations, but they also sparked countless questions.
Could the formulas be gentler?
Could they absorb more easily?
Could they provide nourishment without leaving a heavy residue on the skin?
As I continued studying ingredients and experimenting with formulations, I discovered that while olive oil offered wonderful protective and soothing qualities, it often remained on the skin's surface longer than I wanted. Over time, I began incorporating other botanical oils and ingredients that offered a lighter feel and faster absorption while still supporting the skin barrier.
One ingredient, however, never left my formulas:
Aloe vera.
For nearly two decades, aloe vera has remained one of the foundational ingredients in many of our products. Its ability to hydrate, soothe, and support healthy-looking skin has made it one of the most trusted ingredients in my formulation toolbox.
What I find especially fascinating is that modern research continues to explore many of the same ingredient combinations that first captured my attention years ago. Several studies have investigated the combination of aloe vera and olive oil, finding that together they may provide greater anti-inflammatory and skin-supporting benefits than either ingredient alone. Researchers have reported encouraging results when studying aloe vera and olive oil combinations for wound care, skin comfort, and support of the skin's natural healing processes.
Aloe vera itself has also been the subject of numerous clinical studies and reviews examining its role in maintaining skin moisture, supporting skin integrity, and promoting healthy skin repair.
Of course, no single ingredient is a miracle. Great formulations are rarely about one ingredient alone. They are about how ingredients work together — each contributing something unique to the finished product.
That philosophy continues to guide our work today.
Every ingredient we choose has a purpose. Every formula is the result of years of learning, testing, refining, and asking questions. And every product traces its roots back to a simple lesson learned from a little girl with a sunburn:
Sometimes the most meaningful discoveries begin with caring for someone you love.
This began with our family. Now we offer it to yours.
